One of the greatest problems the world is facing today is the problem of addiction. It is “the” dilemma that seems to have no end. People use drugs, abuse it, then they become depended to it. They hurt their loved ones and they hurt their selves. Their lives crave for the drug and become tangled to looking for means of attaining the drugs. Later on, the person then realizes that life has become worthless and meaningless and that he wants to change. He wants to turn away from drugs but the problem is that he couldn’t easily turn away and say good bye to his long time influential friend- the drug.

Then, he seeks for help from hi loved ones. He looks for the aid of an expert to intoxicate him from the drug. Rehabilitation centers offer help to those who have substance use problems. They provide medical help as well as psychological and social aid. However, rehabilitation may not be enough for the full recovery of the person. The patient should be equipped with the right values and skills in facing the real world after rehabilitation.

Different groups that caters to different kinds of people that needs help offers spiritual enhancement and life skills program to people who wish to receive them. Anybody who is determined to modify and turn away from such addictions or someone who merely wants to help victims recover form the darkness they were in is very welcome to join the fellowship. Here, people help each other in recovering from their problems. The fellowship believes that the best people who could understand addicts are those who have been addicts themselves. Empathy is not enough. Someone who has experienced the dark side of drug would really understand the feeling of an addict and thus, would be able to give the right comfort and support.

Moreover, the fellowship uses the twelve-step program in helping the patients recover. This twelve-step program was first made by the alcoholics anonymous. It consists of twelve steps on how to deal with the addiction, emphasizing acceptance, surrender, and self-awareness. The twelve step program tries to impart that there is one very powerful being above us all, and that we should lay down all our weaknesses to Him and al will be well. Of course, man should do his best to become a better person and God will then do the rest.

Here is an example of the famous twelve-step program from Overeaters Anonymous:

1. We admitted we were powerless over our emotions — that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

With the twelve-step program, individuals who have become victims of addiction are given optimism that it is not too late – that life does not end in addiction. In fact, it even opens a new door, a new episode in our lives in which we should live meaningfully.

Heroin addiction is a serious threat to society. Heroin affects the chemical balance of the human brain and alters it which explains the new ways of thinking and behavior of a heroin user. Moreover, as the body starts tolerating the drug, the body would require increased dosage to be able to feel the “high”. And so, dependency on the drug happens. And with dependency, the person would frequently be hungry for the drug and could not live normally without the drug. This is how an individual develops heroin addiction.

Although quite difficult, addiction is a battle that can always be defeated together with the right determination and self-will. The main step in treating heroin addiction is definitely accepting and realizing that there is really a problem. Once, the problem is recognized, the will to transform and start a new life away from heroin should also be realized. Family members and loved ones could be of great help as the person deals with the problem. Fighting addiction, on the other hand, is not an easy process.

Even if the addiction was individually done, the addiction cannot be defeated alone. Support from loved ones and most probably, seeking professional help would be greatly recommended. Once the person admitted the need for heroin help, the process of seeking the right rehabilitation program begins. Most likely one would enter a heroin help program that will provide the addict with a place to live and around the clock care as he/she starts the process of heroin detoxification. Clinics and rehabilitation centers that has fully trained medical professionals can calculate the state and decide how to go forward with taking the drugs out of the system and restoring the physical well-being suitably to start the person on the road to recovery.

On the other hand, depending on the person’s health, emotional state, and the amount of heroin one normally do in a twenty-four hour period, the process of heroin withdrawal may require different approaches. In some programs, addicts enter a step-down style of program, which essentially means weaning off heroin while using other opiates to deal with the cramps, hallucinations, and other symptoms that often occur during the withdrawal process. By working directly with the doctors and caregivers, your response to a given line of treatment can be monitored and adjusted as needed.

Going through a detoxification program is only one aspect of overall heroin help. There are still many process that an addict must undergo in order fro him or her to get away from the problem. This is where family and loved ones’ roles enters. They may supply the addict with a place to live as he or she achieves strength and startss to mend broken relationships and seeks for a job. Local addict therapy and support groups will allow one to network with other people dedicated to overcoming drug addictions and reclaiming their lives. These types of heroin help and support can give the motivation to keep moving forward even on days when the temptation to begin using again is very strong.

Heroin addiction is very destructive if prolonged. It destroys lives not only the life of the addict but also the life of the people around him/her, most especially those who cared. The user may become someone else rather than his real self, due to the effect of the drug. Emotional issues may underlie the problem of using heroin and so, during treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy should be given on the patient for a holistic treatment. As the person tries to pull though from the addiction, he or she would sooner or later go out into the real world again and start a new life.

One should always be vigilant of the dangers of heroin addiction that one should always be ready to offer help to treat this kind of problem.

I realized today that I have a problem, so I called a alcohol addiction helpline. I don’t know what came over me, but I had nowhere else to turn and it was the only way I knew how to help myself. I’m 17 years old and I started using marijuana three years ago. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t control it anymore and I feel like I need someone to talk to. I am ashamed of my addiction and I do not want to talk to my family or my friends. I’m scared that I will get into trouble or they will feel like I’ve let them down or they have failed me. They haven’t. I just made some mistakes. At school they pass around these fliers for a cocaine addiction helpline. So I came home today, locked myself in my room and called the alcohol addiction helpline.

I was surprised when someone answered the phone and sounded young. He asked me a lot of stuff at first and I thought about hanging up. But I think they’re supposed to ask a certain bunch of questions so they can understand how to help. He never asked me anything that I thought they could use against me in court, so I answered all of them. Even though I made up my name and where I live, I didn’t lie about how I started using cocaine and for how long. I told him how my parents got divorced when I was ten, and how they’ve since remarried and started new families. I told him that I started feeling like an outsider and unwelcome, and drugs made me feel whole. Pretty soon I needed the drugs to get through a day at school. The addiction helpline guy at the other end of the phone listened patiently to every story I told, every word I said. And when I paused to hear what he had to say, there was a thoughtful silence before he answered. And he seemed to say just the right things. I really expected that when I called a cocaine addiction helpline they would have a script to follow and just rattle off advice, but it was not the case. This particular marijuana addiction helpline really made me feel like they actually want to listen to people and help them. He even made me trust him so much that I even ended up telling him that I had recently been molested by a family member. He sounded genuinely concerned and gave me another number to call in case I wanted to talk to a specialist in that arena. But even thought that was not his area of expertise, he said some really heartfelt words about it.

This cocaine addiction helpline was put together very well. The guy gave me his name and spoke to me like a human being with genuine care for my life and future. He eased tension by joking around with me and brought me to tears with words that touched my heart. I will never again think twice about calling a alcohol addiction helpline. I don’t think I will use tomorrow morning. And I think I may tell my mom and dad about my problem. We’ll see.

Addiction, be it with drugs or alcohol is a subtle yet serious problem in our society today. The number of drug abusers and addicts are increasing. We may not see it as a trouble as long as they are not affecting and hurting other people. However, we may not also be aware of the fact that through addiction or drug abuse, the person is hurting and destroying his/her own self.

Subtle, as we may speak, since even the members of the family are often in denial and does not admit that their mother, father, brother, or sister is a victim of drug or alcohol addiction. Much more, the addict is also in denial.Things have become a part of their lives that they see everything as normal. Moreover, the problem is not only partial to the lifestyle changes both in the family and in the addict himself. Mental and physical changes may occur as a result of chronic drug or alcohol use.

It is a common knowledge that these substances, when taken improperly and thus, abused, could have a great impact on the brain. Some parts of the brain are affected which in turn affects the functioning of the person’s body.

Treatment centers are made available nowadays to provide services to those who seek help in treating their conditions. Treatment is simply the therapy done during the process of drug alcohol rehabilitation. Treatment is both educational and therapeutic. Treatment makes a person aware of the problem. It is not always happy in drug treatment centers. Helping addicts pull through is not an easy thing. Actually, it is not something to smile about, though doctors and nurses had to show a smile to provide a friendly and relaxing environment for the patients, their job to treat addiction is not easy.

Useful treatment programs naturally add in many components, each directed to a particular aspect of the illness and its consequences. Addiction treatment have to aid the person to end using drugs, keep a drug-free lifestyle, and achieve productive functioning in the family, at work, and in society. Because substance dependency is typically a chronic ailment, people cannot simply stop using drugs for a few days and be cured. Most patients need repeated episodes of care to attain the definitive goal of sustained abstinence and recovery of their lives.

Most often, patients are given medication according to the kind of addiction they have. With this, the drug’s effect on the brain is slowly being eliminated, allowing the brain to function properly again. Moreover, in aiding people get better from the nightmares of addiction and start a new life, the presence and support of the people that used to be a part of their lives before the addiction is very important. Loved ones have great impacts on the lives of a person. Even addicts have feelings and still, blood is thicker than water. Family members could significantly aid through supporting the person all throughout the therapies and treatment process.

The addiction is not just a problem but after recovering from an addiction can be much worse because of the stigma that comes with it. Cognitive-behavioral therapies are thought to cheer the patients to think positively about life and if necessary, deliberately change their outlooks in life. They are shown that life could still go on even without drugs or alcohol.

Addiction is a serious problem and thus, should be seriously attended to by the people concerned. To solve this problem, treatment should be given seriously.
