One of the greatest problems the world is facing today is the problem of addiction. It is “the” dilemma that seems to have no end. People use drugs, abuse it, then they become depended to it. They hurt their loved ones and they hurt their selves. Their lives crave for the drug and become tangled to looking for means of attaining the drugs. Later on, the person then realizes that life has become worthless and meaningless and that he wants to change. He wants to turn away from drugs but the problem is that he couldn’t easily turn away and say good bye to his long time influential friend- the drug.

Then, he seeks for help from hi loved ones. He looks for the aid of an expert to intoxicate him from the drug. Rehabilitation centers offer help to those who have substance use problems. They provide medical help as well as psychological and social aid. However, rehabilitation may not be enough for the full recovery of the person. The patient should be equipped with the right values and skills in facing the real world after rehabilitation.

Different groups that caters to different kinds of people that needs help offers spiritual enhancement and life skills program to people who wish to receive them. Anybody who is determined to modify and turn away from such addictions or someone who merely wants to help victims recover form the darkness they were in is very welcome to join the fellowship. Here, people help each other in recovering from their problems. The fellowship believes that the best people who could understand addicts are those who have been addicts themselves. Empathy is not enough. Someone who has experienced the dark side of drug would really understand the feeling of an addict and thus, would be able to give the right comfort and support.

Moreover, the fellowship uses the twelve-step program in helping the patients recover. This twelve-step program was first made by the alcoholics anonymous. It consists of twelve steps on how to deal with the addiction, emphasizing acceptance, surrender, and self-awareness. The twelve step program tries to impart that there is one very powerful being above us all, and that we should lay down all our weaknesses to Him and al will be well. Of course, man should do his best to become a better person and God will then do the rest.

Here is an example of the famous twelve-step program from Overeaters Anonymous:

1. We admitted we were powerless over our emotions — that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

With the twelve-step program, individuals who have become victims of addiction are given optimism that it is not too late – that life does not end in addiction. In fact, it even opens a new door, a new episode in our lives in which we should live meaningfully.

T.V., the internet, twitter, facebook, alcohol, cigarettes, food, you name it. People are addicted. It is human nature to be addicted. Do we choose our addictions or do they choose us? Is it in our genes? Who knows? But the fact our nation is addicted remains. National addiction to love. National addiction to the soap operas of other people’s lives. National addiction to the tragedies of the day we find on the 10:00 news. When does it become an addiction? Today we face as a nation, the ever growing fact of technological over-stimulation. With the bombardment of information inherent in the invention of the internet, the nation has become addicted to, what else, information. But that is human nature right? Even biblical nature. Eve ate from the tree of knowledge, and ever since, mankind has been hungry for more. We, as a nation, cannot get enough information! It runs our lives! Since we now have a host of information at our fingertips, we have begun to ask even more questions.

With all the things to be dependent on, information seems to be one of the healthier choices. Our national addiction to technological stimulation may be making us evolve more quickly, or it may just be giving us cancer. Only time will tell. But in the meantime the world is definitely getting more and more interesting. But because this bombardment of information is still new in human history, it is at its age of infancy and we are still learning how to utilize it wisely. We have a long long way to go before we are able to gather all of this information and use it to create world peace and harmony. But little pockets of goodness are beginning to pop up. It’s now more convenient than ever to spread the word about problems that we face such as global warming, poverty, addiction. People are able to find out where to get help for issues when they need it. We are learning and adapting and beginning to control our national addiction. And someday it may stop being our addiction and just be used more as a tool. Or not.

Our nation’s more negative addiction is that addiction to oil and fossil fuels, which needs to change soon. The earth and human kind are both suffering greatly due to this addiction. We must, as a nation, come together to create alternative and efficient fuel systems. Once we break our addiction to oil we will have less war, a cleaner world, more air to breathe, and we will be able to enjoy our positive national addiction to information much longer, due to our years on this earth being extended. Oil has to be one of the most negative national addictions we can have. It sucks the life out of the earth, it’s dirty, it’s toxic, it causes war, greed and corruption. The only thing good about it is that it let’s us drive to mama’s house. Other than that, it sucks. Let’s come up with an alternative. Something that will help our garden grow and create jobs. Come on people! Let’s put together a twelve step for that one.

Thank you for allowing me to rant. I hope this gave you some small amount of information you.

Now is the time Either you or someone you know and love has a problem with addiction. It comes as a hard blow that it is no longer something manageable by you or your family members alone, and it is time to seek help from a treatment facility. Before you venture any further, you must know this. You are not alone! Many people just like you have and are, standing in shoes the same overwhelming size as yours. To take the step toward help is about the bravest, smartest, and most intimidating thing you’ll ever do. But once you step through the door of a drug treatment center, you’ll see how many people are willing to help you to the next step.

Before choosing a treatment center for yourself or your loved one, it is important to know some things about what you are getting into. A few key variables could be the determining factor in getting you to a successful outcome and a fulfilling, shackle free, productive life. It is important to do some research. Check out different websites, read the testimonials. Find a addiction detox program that sounds appealing and contact them. Ask questions! If you are the one who is addicted then it’s easier said than done. If you can’t do it, use a clear moment to ask someone to do it for you. Some of the things you want to know are: Where are they located? Are they far from your current situation and loved ones? If so, is that a positive thing? Will it keep you away from people who hook you up with your vice? If not, will you be able to resist the pull of wanting to escape back to a familiar routine?

You also need to know how you are going to be treated. First, recognize the problem that you are facing. Some addictions require medical attention in the form of prescription drugs. If you are one of these cases, find out what they will be giving to you. How long will this process take? Do they have an inpatient and/or outpatient program? Do they offer support, counseling, and surveillance for both programs?

You or someone you trust should visit the grounds. Do they have a plan for your day? Do they offer fun activities such as sports? Or exercise programs such as Tai Chi or yoga? Get a feel for the staff. Are they receptive when you walk in the door? Do they treat you with respect? Do they seem to feel good about what they are doing? These are all some of the most important determining factors about you or your loved one’s stay. If you don’t like where you live, you are not going to stay.

The final thing you should think about when choosing an addiction detox program is how much it’s going to cost. This, unfortunately, is one of the many bitter realities of overcoming an addiction. Regaining life is priceless, but you don’t want financial woes to throw you into the street. If the addiction you face doesn’t require medical attention it will be much easier on the pocketbook. It could possibly even be free. Check online for any kind of funding you can get, or free programs that will get you or your person back on track.

There is a world of information out there for the taking. Ask the right questions, and the answers will find you. Help is out there waiting to give second chances. Remember that though you feel alone now, there are many people ready and waiting to help.
